SHERIDAN, WYOMING – April 19, 2025 - UN Tourism, the Basque Culinary Center, and Tanzania to Host Groundbreaking Forum in Arusha This April

Bringing the Continent’s Flavors to the Forefront
Following the success of its inaugural edition in Zimbabwe, the Second Regional Forum on Gastronomy Tourism for Africa will take place in Arusha, Tanzania, from April 23–25, 2025. Organized by UN Tourism in collaboration with the Basque Culinary Center and the United Republic of Tanzania, the event is set to position gastronomy tourism as a vital engine for sustainable and inclusive development across the African continent.

Empowering Local Communities Through Gastronomy
Gastronomy tourism plays a central role in UN Tourism’s Agenda for Africa – Tourism for Inclusive Growth. The initiative seeks to promote sustainability, enhance local value chains, preserve cultural heritage, and drive community empowerment. Backed by Tanzania’s top leadership, including President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Dr. Pindi Hazara Chana, the Minister of Tourism and Natural Resources, the Forum will unite chefs, entrepreneurs, influencers, and policy leaders to explore ways to elevate Africa’s culinary and tourism potential.

“Our Regional Forum on Gastronomy Tourism for Africa, the second in the region, celebrates the many flavors and diverse talent of the continent. We look forward to returning to Tanzania to once again bring together chefs, business leaders and public sector authorities to help make gastronomy tourism a source of development growth and opportunity for destination and communities around the continent.” – Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-General, UN Tourism

Cultural Identity Meets Sustainable Development
Tanzania’s hosting of this landmark event offers a unique platform to share its rich culinary traditions with a global audience.

Pindi Hazara Chana, Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Tanzania

Driving Innovation and Regional Cohesion
The Forum also underscores the importance of innovation, local knowledge, and creative approaches in the development of gastronomy tourism.

“In its second edition in Africa, this Regional Forum serves as a key platform to drive the transformation of gastronomy tourism and its impact on local communities and the environment. Innovation, creativity, and a strong connection to the territory are fundamental pillars in strengthening sustainable gastronomy tourism—one that fosters development and strengthens regional cohesion.” – Joxe Mari Aizega, Director General, Basque Culinary Center

A Spotlight on Africa’s Culinary Diversity
Africa’s rich gastronomic traditions—ranging from iconic dishes like couscous and Ceebu Jën to modern interpretations using local ingredients—will be showcased through immersive panels, demonstrations, and collaborative dialogues. These sessions aim to boost destination branding, elevate international visibility, and contribute to regional economic growth.

Fostering Growth Through Policy and Collaboration
Building on momentum from Zimbabwe, this year’s Forum will advance Africa’s position in the global gastronomy tourism sector.
