SHERIDAN, WYOMING – April 19, 2025 - Celebrating a legacy of leadership in tourism

As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, UN Tourism welcomed His Excellency Mr. José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero to its Madrid headquarters on 18 March 2025. The organization paid tribute to the former President of the Government of Spain (2004–2011) for his pivotal role in promoting sustainable and inclusive tourism during his leadership.

Driving tourism growth and resilience

Under Mr. Zapatero’s administration, international tourist arrivals to Spain rose from 52 million to 56 million, solidifying the country’s global standing as a top-tier destination. Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili praised this achievement, noting, “His leadership laid the foundation for growth that has continued to this day. He was a true leader in achieving gender equality and accessibility, principles that are also fundamental for UN Tourism.”

Building an inclusive and equitable sector

Mr. Zapatero implemented key policies that enhanced inclusion in the tourism industry, notably the landmark Law of Equality. This legislation significantly boosted women’s participation in the labor market, including in tourism, where many now hold leadership roles. He also championed accessibility, ensuring tourism became more inclusive for people with disabilities.

Tourism as a force for peace and prosperity

Secretary-General Pololikashvili commended Mr. Zapatero’s broader legacy of peace advocacy, emphasizing how peace and security foster tourism prosperity. “Citing the example of Spain,” he noted, “he made it clear that with peace and security comes prosperity,” and highlighted regions such as the Basque Country for their cultural and gastronomic richness.

Recognizing a lasting legacy

In appreciation of his dedication to tourism and its positive global impact, UN Tourism presented Mr. Zapatero with a commemorative plaque. The honor underscores his enduring contribution to building a more equitable and sustainable tourism sector.
