SHERIDAN, WYOMING – April 19, 2025 - Ebensperger presents Bonnie Camplin’s evocative solo exhibition “Instrument,” inviting audiences to reflect on the interplay between perception, power, and altered states of consciousness.
A new solo exhibition from Bonnie Camplin
From April 26 to June 8, 2025, Berlin’s contemporary art scene welcomes the latest solo show by acclaimed British artist Bonnie Camplin at Ebensperger. The exhibition, titled Instrument, opens with a vernissage on Friday, April 26, from 5 to 9 PM, coinciding with Gallery Weekend Berlin.
A multifaceted approach to perception
Camplin’s exhibition delves into philosophical and scientific realms of human experience through an immersive visual and conceptual journey. Known for her cross-disciplinary methodology, Camplin brings together film, video, music, performance, drawing, and writing—transforming the gallery space into a dynamic medium of inquiry.
“I’m trying to work out what the Real is,” Camplin states in her artistic statement. This pursuit threads through her practice, challenging audiences to question collective realities and confront the boundaries of what is perceived as truth.
Revisiting ‘The Military Industrial Complex’
The exhibition marks a return to and development of ideas first introduced in her 2015 Turner Prize-nominated work, The Military Industrial Complex. In Instrument, Camplin continues her investigation into consciousness, exploring its implications through a range of historical, philosophical, and contemporary lenses.
Blending disciplines to interrogate the real
The artist, who has studied dance, fine art, and film, uses her background in psychology and parapsychology to question dominant structures of understanding. Her work is deeply rooted in research, reflecting on how people have historically sought control over subjective experience—be it through institutions, ideology, or the very tools of perception.
“The greatest challenge for an artwork today is to de-pattern,” Camplin reflects. “Our nervous systems are thoroughly and systematically patterned, and these patterns are being aggressively re-written by novel technologies.” In this context, her work becomes both an investigation and an instrument—a means to dismantle, reprogram, and ultimately re-empower human consciousness.
An invitation to experience the unknown
Instrument is not a conventional exhibition. It asks visitors to actively engage—to become aware of their mental habits, to question the forces that shape them, and to remain open to alternative ways of perceiving reality.
“I am more interested in how people make and experience their own sense than I am in meaning per se,” Camplin explains. “This includes that which is usually dismissed as nonsense.” Her work invites reconsideration of what is deemed legitimate knowledge, suggesting that fringe theories, personal beliefs, and so-called irrational experiences may hold critical insights into the human condition.
