SHERIDAN, WYOMING – June 13, 2025 – Volkswagen is revving up for a spectacular celebration of performance and heritage as it gears up to unveil the most powerful production Golf GTI ever at the legendary ADAC 24-hour race at the Nürburgring on June 20. In honor of the Golf GTI’s 50th anniversary, the brand is combining adrenaline-pumping racing with nostalgic fanfare and a sneak peek at future innovations.
Unveiling a GTI Milestone on the World Stage
Volkswagen will present a world premiere during the race weekend with the introduction of a special anniversary model commemorating five decades of GTI legacy. While full details remain under wraps, fans can expect a top-tier vehicle that blends power, style, and cutting-edge features like never before.
And that’s just the beginning. Volkswagen is turning the Nürburgring into a GTI fan haven, complete with high-octane competition, exclusive displays, and interactive experiences.
Two Racing GTIs Set to Conquer the “Green Hell”
On Saturday, June 21, the action intensifies as two specially modified Golf GTI Clubsport 24h models hit the track for the grueling 24-hour race. Prepared by Max Kruse Racing, both entries are competing in the AT3 class, powered by innovative Shell E20 bioethanol fuel co-developed with Volkswagen.
With enhanced performance and eco-conscious engineering, these GTIs are serious contenders:
- Start number 19 will be piloted by Benny Leuchter, Johan Kristoffersson, Heiko Hammel, and Nico Otto.
- Start number 76 features Jasmin Preisig, Fabian Vettel, Timo Hochwind, and Christian Gebhardt.
More Power, Less Emissions, Smarter Design
The new Golf GTI Clubsport 24h boasts a stunning 397 PS (291 kW) and a top speed of 265 km/h. Upgrades include increased output, improved aerodynamics, and reduced emissions.
Benny Leuchter explained, “A new regulation on vehicle classification has increased the starting weight of the Golf by 30 kilograms. We compensate for this by increasing the output by around 50 PS.”
Aerodynamics have also been carefully fine-tuned. “We have changed the flow of air onto the rear wing by moving the wing further to the rear. As a result, we generate less air resistance while the downforce stays the same,” he added.
Engineering That Delivers for the Long Haul
Johan Kristoffersson emphasized the importance of structural improvements: “At the same time, we have achieved better weight distribution through the use of lightweight components, among other things. In addition, the GTI’s centre of gravity is lower, which increases performance.”
The teams are also counting on durability, with lighter Protrac wheels helping reduce strain on moving parts. “Every little bit of additional durability increases the chance of getting through the 24 hours,” said Leuchter.
Facing the Nürburgring’s Ultimate Test
The Nürburgring Nordschleife is known for its unpredictability, and drivers are well aware of the challenges. Jasmin Preisig shared, “The track is our biggest opponent because the weather conditions are often uncertain, accidents happen in front of you, or dirt or debris gets onto the tarmac. Conditions are constantly changing. That’s why you also ultimately need luck to overcome the enormous distance without problems. I always say: if you reach the finish line after these long hours, you’ve already won.”
Volkswagen Parade and Interactive Fun for All
Beyond the race, Volkswagen will showcase several other highlights on the Ring Boulevard, including the all-electric ID. GTI Concept and the Golf R in a stunning new color. Fans can even experience the thrill of the Nordschleife themselves through on-site driving simulators.
As a final flourish before the main event, 40 Volkswagen GTIs from all eight generations will take a ceremonial lap, delighting fans and reinforcing the enduring passion for GTI culture.
