Global Tourism Roars Back in 2023 with China Leading Spending and France Welcoming the Most Visitors

According to the latest data from the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), international travel saw a significant uptick, with spending reaching near pre-pandemic levels.

Leading the charge in travel expenditure was China, reclaiming its position as the world's top spender. Chinese tourists poured a staggering $196.5 billion into international travel, a testament to the country's pent-up demand for global experiences as travel restrictions eased. This remarkable spending spree surpassed that of the United States, which held the top spot in 2022, as well as other major markets like Germany, the United Kingdom, and France.

UN Tourism Executive Council Charts Path for Sustainable and Resilient Tourism Sector

SHERIDAN, WYOMING – June 13, 2024 – BARCELONA, SPAIN – June 13, 2024 – The 121st session of the UN Tourism Executive Council convened in Barcelona, uniting global tourism leaders to address the industry's robust recovery and chart a course for sustainable growth and investment.

The council, comprised of representatives from 47 countries including 18 Ministers of Tourism, acknowledged the sector's significant rebound, citing UN Tourism data that revealed 285 million international tourist arrivals in the first quarter of 2024, a 20% increase compared to the same period in 2023. International tourism receipts also reached USD 1.5 trillion in 2023, signifying a strong return to pre-pandemic levels.
