SHERIDAN, WYOMING – June 17, 2025 – Volvo Cars is redefining vehicle safety with the introduction of a world-first multi-adaptive safety belt, set to debut in the all-electric Volvo EX60 in 2026. This breakthrough innovation tailors crash protection to individual passengers using real-time data, promising a safer future for every type of body and driving situation.
This latest advancement takes Volvo’s legacy of safety to new heights, offering smarter, personalized protection that evolves with the occupant and driving context. It's not just about belts anymore—it's about intelligent systems that truly understand you.
Smarter safety starts with personalization
The new multi-adaptive safety belt adapts to each passenger using data from both interior and exterior sensors. Whether you're tall or petite, sitting upright or slightly reclined, the system adjusts itself to optimize protection.
- In a high-impact crash, a larger person will receive a higher belt load to reduce the risk of head injury.
- A smaller individual in a milder crash will receive a gentler setting to avoid rib damage.
This flexibility comes from expanding the traditional three load-limiting profiles to eleven—creating a broader range of personalized safety settings.
Backed by decades of real-world research
Volvo’s leadership in safety is built on over five decades of data, with a comprehensive database of more than 80,000 real-life crash cases. This research underpins the smart technology behind the adaptive belt.
“The world first multi-adaptive safety belt is another milestone for automotive safety and a great example of how we leverage real-time data with the ambition to help save millions of more lives,” said Åsa Haglund, head of Volvo Cars Safety Centre. “This marks a major upgrade to the modern three-point safety belt, a Volvo invention introduced in 1959, estimated to have saved over a million lives.”
Intelligent crash detection in real time
Volvo’s advanced safety belt uses various sensors to collect and analyze crash-related information, including:
- Crash direction and intensity
- Passenger posture and seating position
- Individual height, weight, and body shape
The system then instantly determines the best load-limiting response—providing optimal protection for that unique moment.
Always learning, always improving
In true Volvo fashion, this innovation isn’t static. The multi-adaptive belt will receive regular improvements via over-the-air software updates. As new data is collected from real-world use, the system refines how it responds to various scenarios, ensuring it remains cutting-edge for years to come.
Coming soon in the Volvo EX60
This game-changing safety belt will be introduced in the fully electric Volvo EX60, expected to launch in 2026. It represents a new era of individualized in-car protection—customized safety that adapts to you and your needs.
