Volkswagen Unveils Three Smart EV Concepts in Shanghai, Promising a New Era of Personalized Driving

SHERIDAN, WYOMING – April 29, 2025 – Volkswagen is revving up its future in China with the exciting debut of three innovative electric concept vehicles—ID. AURA, ID. ERA, and ID. EVO—at Auto Shanghai 2025. These next-generation models offer a bold glimpse into how driving can become more intuitive, more connected, and far more personalized for consumers across all lifestyles and budgets.

With a strategic focus on the fast-growing Chinese market, Volkswagen’s new offerings cater directly to local preferences, blending smart technology with distinctive design philosophies. From extended range to AI-powered automation, these concept cars are engineered to bring real-life convenience and comfort to the forefront.

A Vision "In China, for China"

Volkswagen has made it clear that these vehicles are more than just design studies—they’re the foundation of a broader strategy to lead the electric mobility space in China. “The three concept vehicles are the visible outcome of our ‘In China, for China’ strategy. We have thus made all the necessary preparations to remain in pole position among foreign automakers in China,” said Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand.

Between now and 2027, Volkswagen plans to release over 30 new models in China, including more than 20 New Energy Vehicles (NEVs). These production models will stem directly from the concept cars now dazzling attendees at Auto Shanghai.

Meet the Future: ID. AURA, ID. ERA, and ID. EVO

Each concept car has been uniquely tailored to meet the expectations of specific Chinese consumer groups:

  • ID. ERA: Designed by SAIC VOLKSWAGEN, this full-size SUV is perfect for families and long-distance drivers. It features three rows of seats and combines a battery-powered range of 300 kilometers with a fuel-powered generator for an extra 700 kilometers. That’s more than 1,000 kilometers of total travel without needing to stop—ideal for road trip lovers.
  • ID. EVO: Developed by Volkswagen Anhui, the EVO targets trend-conscious drivers seeking cutting-edge tech and performance. It boasts an 800-volt platform and advanced zonal electronics, allowing for rapid over-the-air updates and personalized digital services. It’s also Volkswagen’s first all-electric full-size SUV in the ID. UNYX family.
  • ID. AURA: A collaboration with FAW-Volkswagen, this compact notchback electric car is perfect for budget-conscious buyers who don’t want to compromise on innovation. Built on the new Compact Main Platform, it includes a smartphone-like center console UI, high-performance AI computing, and a humanoid digital assistant that makes driving feel smart, natural, and easy.

Smarter Driving With AI-Powered Autonomy

Volkswagen isn’t just chasing electric dreams—it’s shaping them with intelligent technology. All three concept models are designed to support Level 2++ autonomous driving, where the car can handle complex maneuvers like overtaking and merging under driver supervision.

This leap in automation is powered by an AI-based system that adapts to both the environment and the user’s behavior, creating a safer and more relaxed driving experience. “Over the next three years, we will bring out more than 20 state-of-the-art NEVs alone with forward-looking technologies to cater to all our different customers in China,” emphasized Stefan Mecha, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars Brand for China.

Built for Speed—Development Speed

With its new development center in Hefei, Volkswagen has picked up what it calls “China speed,” aiming to complete model development in just 34 months. “We will launch the right models at the right speed and with the right partners,” said Thomas Ulbrich, CEO of Volkswagen China Technology Center.

When and Where to See Them

All three concept cars—the ID. AURA, ID. ERA, and ID. EVO—are on public display at Auto Shanghai through early May. These models will begin rolling out as production vehicles starting in 2026, exclusively for the Chinese market.

Driving Toward a Brighter Tomorrow

With stylish designs, practical innovations, and a deep focus on user experience, Volkswagen’s latest concepts prove the future of driving can be both smart and emotionally satisfying. Whether you're a tech-savvy commuter or an adventurous family, there’s something exciting on the horizon.
