PEUGEOT and Under The Pole Dive into the Future of Ocean Exploration with Capsule II

SHERIDAN, WYOMING – June 15, 2025 – A groundbreaking collaboration is making waves as PEUGEOT partners with Under The Pole to co-develop the next generation of underwater observation habitats, with the ambitious Capsule II project set to launch in 2026. This forward-thinking initiative aims to enhance both the scientific experience and environmental stewardship beneath the waves.

Designed for Science, Driven by Innovation

The Capsule II project builds on the success of Under The Pole's original underwater habitat, which allows marine scientists to remain submerged for up to three days. With panoramic viewing portholes and space for vital ecological research, the current capsule has played a critical role in studying marine species and underwater ecosystems.

Now, PEUGEOT is stepping in with its design expertise, working closely with Under The Pole and Stellantis Design Studio to reimagine this habitat. Capsule II will offer scientists:

  • Improved ergonomic interior layouts inspired by PEUGEOT’s i-Cockpit
  • Enhanced materials designed for durability and comfort
  • Optimized exterior access and equipment usability
  • Upgraded onboard communication systems for seamless connectivity

A Shared Vision for Education and Sustainability

Founded in 2008 by Ghislain Bardout and Emmanuelle Périé-Bardout in Concarneau, France, Under The Pole shares PEUGEOT’s deep commitment to the environment and public education. This partnership goes far beyond innovation — it's about fostering awareness and responsibility for ocean conservation.

“Since the beginning of their collaboration, PEUGEOT and Under The Pole have shared a common vision of education, innovation, and sustainability. By combining PEUGEOT's expertise in design and technology (PEUGEOT i-Cockpit) with Under The Pole's experience in underwater exploration, this new project marks a significant step in their partnership to continue underwater exploration while ensuring the comfort and safety of scientists.”

Comfort Beneath the Surface

The goal is to reimagine how researchers live and work under the sea. Drawing on feedback from scientists who’ve used the current capsule, PEUGEOT’s design team will focus on maximizing interior space and enhancing everyday functionality in challenging underwater environments.

Between now and summer 2026, the joint team will:

  • Test and validate new design concepts
  • Develop both 3D and physical models
  • Finalize engineering and production of Capsule II

These steps will lead to a truly next-level habitat that blends style, technology, and purpose in the service of science.

Exploration Meets Everyday Excellence

For consumers who appreciate cutting-edge innovation and environmental commitment, this collaboration highlights PEUGEOT’s broader role in shaping a sustainable future. The same design sensibilities that define their electric vehicles — intuitive controls, refined aesthetics, and advanced connectivity — are now helping protect the planet's most delicate ecosystems.

As PEUGEOT notes, “PEUGEOT products incorporate the latest technology, showcased by the Panoramic i-Cockpit and ChatGPT on board across the entire range. PEUGEOT is also committed to educating younger generations by supporting initiatives such as Born Free and Under The Pole to bring them closer to nature.”
