Southwest Airlines Announces Historic Layoffs in Restructuring Effort
SHERIDAN, WYOMING – February 18, 2025 – SHERIDAN, WYOMING – Feb. 18, 2025 – Southwest Airlines announced Monday that it plans to lay off about 15% of its corporate workforce, or about 1,750 people. This move marks a significant turning point in the airline's 53-year history as it faces increasing pressure to improve its financial performance.
Cost-Cutting Measures and Restructuring
The carrier stated that these reductions will be "almost entirely" focused on corporate overhead and leadership positions. As part of the restructuring, eleven senior positions, at the vice president level and above, will be eliminated. Furthermore, a 15% reduction will be implemented within Southwest's senior management committee.
